In Case You Forgot…
July 30, 2009

For most of us Hurricane Ike is a nasty memory of long, sultry nights spent eating canned foods and screaming at Centerpoint. As we close in on the anniversary of the third costliest hurricane in history I felt compelled to remind everyone that Ike is not just a memory, but still a part of daily life for many people. Specifically, those who live in Smith Point. This is a tiny dot at the end of Chambers County directly across the bay from the Bolivar Peninsula. I took a trip down there for a story and snapped a few photos. The slide show is a debris pile next to a subdivision called “Little Baytown”.

Health Care Solution: Euthanize the Old?
July 28, 2009

Got a call from mom this morning asking why “the news” has not spent more time warning senior citizens about H.R. 3200, “America’s Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009”. It’s not the entire bill that had mom nearly apoplectic;  apparently it was only “page 425”. This page of the proposed bill explains how senior citizens will be required to go through mandatory counseling every five years regarding euthanasia. From what I gather President Obama just doesn’t like old people and his proposed bill wants to push anyone over the age of sixty-five toward their great reward. One problem–IT’S NOT TRUE. I did a little research and found out a “page 425” e-mail has been circulating the web faster than a two-for-one, all you can eat buffet coupon. Here’s exactly what mom received this morning….

What a wonderful health care program the government wants to provide.  I hope people WAKE-UP to what all of the idiots in DC are trying to do to this country.  Of course Obama has said he will not use this new system and of those sitting on their thrones in DC will not be required to use it either.

Page 425 of Health Care BILL

On page 425 it says in black and white that EVERYONE on Social Security, (will include all Senior Citizens and SSI people) will go to MANDATORY counseling every 5 years to learn and to choose from ways to end your suffering (and your life).  Health care will be denied based on age.  500 Billion will be cut from Seniors healthcare.  The only way for that to happen is to drastically cut health care, the oldest and the sickest will be cut first.  Paying for your own care will not be an option.  Now, CALL YOUR PEOPLE IN WASHINGTON!  Tell them to read page 425 if they don’t read anything else.  Surely some of them have parents.

“ON PAGE 425 OF OBAMA’S HEALTH CARE BILL, the Federal Government will require EVERYONE who is on Social Security to undergo a counseling session every 5 years with the objective being that they will explain to them just how to end their own life earlier.  Yes… They are going to push SUICIDE to cut medicare spending!”

If this doesn’t make your blood boil….. Nothing will!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 What this bogus e-mail is referring to is section 1233 of H.R. 3200. This section of the bill explains how medicare will pay for “advance care planning consultation” once every five years. This “consultation” covers everything from nursing homes, hospice care, antibiotics, etc. Also, the proposed bill explains that if a patients health status changes within that five years (i.e. diagnosed with terminal cancer) then medicare will pay for additional counseling. The “Page 425” e-mail is a hoax intended to inflame an already fiery topic.
Finally taking some responsibility
July 21, 2009
I know the headline shows an inherent bias onthis subject, but this is my blog and I am permitted a certain amount of latitude. The issue of border security has long been a topic of visceral debate in the United States, but rarely does Mexico shoulder any of the blame. Some in Mexico love to blame the United States for being the source of most of the weapons flowing into the hands of the cartels. What irks me is the same people wagging an accusatory finger in our direction take no responsibility for the lackadaisical border security that allows the weapons to get into Mexico in the first place. More importantly, a lack of border security that does not choke off the cartels’ life’s blood; cash. Millions of dollars are smuggled into Mexico every month, keeping the cartels flush with the latest weaponry and intelligence gathering assets. Want to know just how much cash gets back into Mexico? Read this article in the Wall Street Journal, http://online.wsj.com/article_email/SB124804075279363265-lMyQjAxMDI5NDI4MTAyNDEwWj.html. I’ve driven across the border into Mexico more times than I count for both work and personal reasons (OK, that last part doesn’t sound right but you get the point). Every time I’ve driven across the border into Mexico the only sentinel I faced was a small metal button that illuminated either a green or a red light. Green light..Bienvenidos, enjoy your stay! Red light…anything to declare, maybe pay a small tariff. In either case, the effort to check out what a person is bringing into Mexico is cursory at best. Now to the point of that headline…”Finally taking some responsibility”.  Mexico is investing $1.4 billion (US) over the next five years to modernize Ports of Entry with improved technology and training to specifically counter gun and bulk cash smuggling. Mexican Customs is also putting nearly 1,500 new agents into the field next month. 900 of these agents are replacing corrupt officials who’ve held key positions for years. The key is stopping the money from flowing into Mexico and into the hands of the cartels. The US has already stepped up southbound interdictions, but it is going to take Mexico finally being serious about stopping the river of cash before the cartels will truly feel the pinch.
More Heat for the Gulf/Zeta Cartel
July 20, 2009
New charges and bigger rewards are being leveled at the command and control structure of the Gulf/Zeta Cartel.  This is the largest of the cartels, operating from Nueva Laredo all the way down to the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula. The top four members (pics below-just drag cursor over each pic for the name) of the Cartel have now been designated “Narcotics Kingpins” by the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control. These four have been under indictment in Houston since 2002. The “Kingpin” designation now allows our government to seize any assets these four may have under US jurisdiction. Also, anyone caught doing business (even legitimate) with these four individuals or any of their associated businesses can be slapped with up to a million dollars in civil penalties. The US State Department also announced today it was offering a $50 million reward for the capture of these four and their top 15 lieutenants. This announcement comes after last March’s announcement by the Mexican Government that it was offering $30,000,000 pesos each for its 24 most wanted drug lords. These four are also on Mexico’s list. I’ve got a story running at six tonight with a little more detail.
